Islamaphobia is the methodological offspring of Anti-Semitism

In honor of the Daniel Pipes motivated hacking of Imam 'Abdul-Alim Musa's Myspace page I present the following reflection.

Both antisemitism and Islamophobia involve rifling through a diverse array of religious and cultural texts with the aim of extracting those statements which would cast the target in the worst possible light. Both presume to dictate to the Jew or to the Muslim what kind of person they ought to be; the fall back position for both the Islamaphobe or the Antisemite when confronted with Jews or Muslims who fail to typify a stereotype is to claim that these Jews or Muslims are not being true to their own beliefs, are inauthentic, self-hating, etc. Both the Islamaphobe and the anti-semite elevate text over context; they extract the lines they need with no concern for either the surrounding material or the larger tradition in which the text is embedded. The Islamaphobe takes Ayahs of the Quran which counsel against relying on non-muslims for protection and uses them to convict Muslims of intractable otherness and relentless hostility. Likewise, the Antisemite takes theoretical discussions in the Talmud about the proper relations between Jews and Gentiles and uses them to construct a slanderous stereotype of the Jew as petty tribalist, with no moral concern for those not part of his or her tiny nation. Both ignore the rich history of interaction between both communities and the outside world and both omit the underlying universalistic ethical stance of the two communities. It is inconsistent to abhor and excoriate one without taking a similar stance against the other.

Ma'ashallah, yours is a well thought out and cogent response to a very provocative hate page. The Zionist technique of quoting Qur'anic verses out of context seems relatively effective at confusing folks with limited knowledge of Islam and Qur'an. For example, I frequently get questions from friends in Peace Action who are very Muslim-friendly, but utterly confused by such misinformation (eg, the fabricated version of verse 9:11, about the "Eagle of Arabia"). I have not seen many quotations out of context (or fabrications) of Jewish texts from the Muslim side, but then perhaps I haven't looked in the right places.

Did you see the initial pseudo-imammusa page, with the cartoon arab-in-camel posture, scurrilous attacks on the Prophet (SAW) (for example that he was a pedophile (nauzobillah), and such? myspace removed it after numerous complaints, but evidently, the URL/ID was almost immediately re-claimed by a second Zionist, who set up a more "moderate" hate page, minus the items mentioned above. This one only supports the IDF (killers of tens of thousands of Palestinian children);extols Meir Kahane (who opened fire on Muslims praying in Al-Aqsa), and insists that all Muslims repudiate the Muslim resistance, or be given the t-label.

Reading the original Jhd Watch post (basically an attack on Imam Musa, and a call to hack his site) and accompanying comments, I was struck by the mob mentality of the readership--hardly a dissenting voice in the very numerous comments. Almost certainly none of them had ever heard/heard off Imam Musa prior to reading the Jhd Watch post. Yet they were willing to engage in death threats against the Imam, referring to him as "Da Martyr Imam Musa."

Sadly, the "mainstream" Muslim community has not, to my knowledge, rallied to the support of Imam Musa, despite the clear hatred of the perpetrators, for all of Islam and its Prophet (SAW).
