It looks like Arafat may be dead. This is bad, bad news.
A commentator on Pacifica said that Kerry conceded the election so early because "he is a gentleman." I think it has more to do with not causing a ruckus that could harm his senatorial re-election campaign.

In your opinion, how will Arafat's death affect the world?
As far as Kerry is concerned, I figure that conceeding early makes him look like a wuss whereas holding on would have made him look like an asshole. If it had been Bush, conceeding early would have made him look like a gentleman and holding on would have made him a tenacious supporter of justice. Muthafucka.
While I agree that Arafat's lack of practical accomplishments, his willingness to preside over the virtual Bantustan prescribed by the Oslo Accord and his responsibility for the high rate of corruption in the PA seriously undermine his credibility, I think he is still a powerful symbol of a united Palestinian people; one which, while acknowledging Islam as a powerful reserve of values, recognizes the diversity of Palestinian society and subsequently the importance of a secular government. Christians and secular palestinians could take part in the PLO, the PA, and Al-Fatah in a way which would be difficult to duplicate under the hegemony of Hamas or Islamic Jihad
(although I certainly recognize the social and humanitarian achievements of the former which contrast quite favorably with the activities of the PA). I am hopeful that the recent resurgence of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine is a signal that there is still room in Palestinian society for viable secular movements.
arafat was a symbol and as such effective. as in the rest of the world, political achievements are almost secondary.
nice blog, by the way.
