My life has entered what I think is an interim period. I have left school for now, have settled into a weekly routine of work alternated with eclectic reading, and await an opportunity to realize myself politically. I must work out some kind of politcal philosophy that I can work for, that can guide my participation in seeminglly unrelated solidarity movements and ethico-social debates. Of course a political philosophy implies an ethical philosophy, which in turn implies a religious philosophy. Resolving these issues, formulating a set of guiding principles, and exploring their ramifications is essential if I am to succesfully move on from this stage of my life.
And I also need to buckled down in my study of Urdu. Memorizing poetry is not enough. I must sit down and seriously study my textbooks.
And I may also be getting a kitten. My Jaan Begum really, really, wants one, and I've always wanted to have one. Deirdre, any suggestions on cat care?

First of all, the pictures are great. And, when you two decide to have kids, they are going to be amazingly cute. (Whenever I post on your 'blog I feel so shallow, but I figure someone has to be shallow, so I might as well do it.)
About cats and kittens. Wonderful, wonderful little beasts. First, get one from a shelter. The shelter will take care of the shots and will spay or neuter the pet. DO NOT DECLAW YOUR ANIMAL! That is a cruel, evil practice. Anyone who feels that their furnature is more important than their cat's physical state should have their fingers cut off at the first knuckle. There is another practice now, where the tendons that controls the cat's nails are cut, but this is cruel too. The best way to keep a cat from scratching is to provide plenty of areas for the cat to scratch (there are flat cardboard things that are pretty cheap. Cats love them--at least, every cat that I have known has loved them.) If you get a scratching post get one tall anough that the cat can streach out to scratch. Mom made one for her cats that is two 2x4s glued together wrapped with rope and a platform on top covered with carpet--it all sits on a peice of wood. It is about waist height at the cats love it.) Also, keep your cat's nails trimmed. If the cat does scratch furnature, you can buy sticky tape that the cat will hate.
Sorry, that got a little long. Okay...
SHelters have kittens--I can't remember when kitten season is... I think it is in the spring. ANother option is to get an older cat. Sometimes, when older people die, their famlies dump the cat into a shelter. Most people adopt kittens, so often these older cats are put down.
Every time I have gotten a cat I have felt a connection with the animal right away. It is, for lack of a better word, neat.
Um, what else. Play with the cat. THere is a toy called a CAT DANCER--it is simply a metal wire with cardboard attached to both ends. Again, every cat I have ever known LOVES this toy. Too bad it is so hard to find.
Use a cat food that lists meat as the first ingrediant--a lot of cat foods have filler as their first ingerdiants. My cat, Pandora, is actually kinda allergic to these types of cat food.
Brush the kitty.
Love the kitty.
And if you get rid of the kitty when Nadia gets pregnant, so help me, I will hunt you both down and... be pissy. Really pissy.
If you have any problems locating a kitty, Mom has done some work with a cat rescue group so she can help locate one for you.
Yeah, I'm so excited for you guys. You will LOVE your new kitty. And I know you will be good parents.
